Week One - Warmth and Laughter

The summer before I moved to Irvine, two of my closest friends and I took a trip to Grounds for Sculpture, a public sculpture garden and museum in Hamilton, New Jersey. The day was bitter sweet, as I had always wanted to visit the garden, but knew I would soon be saying goodbye to many of my friends and family in order to move across the country for graduate school. It was a clear, sunny day and the sky was a beautiful color of blue. We all took a ton of pictures, but it was the work of an artist by the name of Brower Hatcher that really caught my eye, particularly because of the way the sunshine was streaming through it. I love how the sunlight changes the shades of the glass pieces and makes them sparkle. Although the statue itself is made partially of hard, grey, metal wire, there is a sense of warmth and joy in the photo that appropriately sums up the general mood and tone of the day. I think this photo does well in describing the fun we had that day while picnicking in the park and looking at the artwork. It reminds me of the laughter and good times we had.

And Here Comes the Storm...

Over the summer, my boyfriend and I embarked on what I call our 7 State Epic Road Trip Extravaganza! We drove from California through Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming to Yellowstone National Park and back again. It was an absolutely beautiful trip with stunning scenery and unforgettable sights. It was difficult to choose just one lighting image for this blog! In addition to the wildlife and breathtaking views, Yellowstone National Park boasts an unbelievably wide range of landscape. From the reflecting hot spring pools and towering geysers to snow capped mountains and wide open meadows, every bend brought about new inspiring sights and unique natural lighting. One can easily see why this place is a photographers dream! When this image was taken, we had just spent all day hiking through dense forest up a mountain and finally reached an open look-out point. We had not realized that a storm was fast approaching. I love the split sky reflected in the winding river. The darkness quickly encompassed the land as if out of a fairy tale. The storm clouds even have a silver lining of light around them. As the last bit of sunlight faded remarkably fast from view, we were suddenly stuck in a downpour, with thunder, lightning, and even hail. The warm temperatures dropped to freezing. But just as quickly as the storm came, the sun pushed through the clouds and it passed, leaving us soaked, but awestruck. :)

Welcome to Drama 157 Fall 2011 Lighting Journal

Now that you have decided to enhance your appreciation for light, I want to help you develop your eye for light not just in the theatre but in your life.
In order to more effectively understand how light can alter the perception of the audience; we need to first understand how it alters our perception on a daily basis.
As we move through the quarter, I hope that this blog will help you to discover light in ways that you have not seen before.
Perhaps you'll see colors you've never noticed before, you may recognize the angle of a certain light, and maybe you will find ways to articulate how a light makes you feel.
In order to assist with this process, I've created this blog so that all of you may contribute a short piece each week on an aspect of light that you have noticed throughout your journeys.
This can include a particular moment in a play, a beautiful sunset, a great rock concert or a well lit store, or just what happens to your emotions when the sun moves behind a cloud. Anything and everything can be included.
Please start your title for each posting with the Week of the quarter and a sybject.
Your postings do count towards your final grade.
Please include photos with your post to help us see what you are describing!
Whether or not you continue in lighting design after this class, I hope that this online journal will help you to discover inspiration for you art in daily life.
Thanks and Happy Blogging!!
